Ali regularly takes Jack, a friendly and mischievous miniature Shetland pony, to visit people in care homes. During one visit, they meet Billy, a boy who often visits his grandfather.
Billy is surprised but delighted to meet Jack, and he praises the hard-working nurses. His comment about the need for more specialist nurses gets Ali thinking – could Jack Brock somehow help? Ali decides to organise a sponsored walk with Jack to raise money, leading to a day full of fun, community and coming together to help a valuable cause.
The book may be aimed at children and full of chaos but there are many relatable incidents that will make dog owners grin from ear to ear just as much if not more than the children.
Ali has grown up surrounded by dogs and horses, she has cleverly illustrated many of the breeds she adores, she has recognised those typical of the English country life. Not forgetting the old English sheep dog, a breed she had to include in the book! You will find naughty dachshunds, squirrels, terriers, fox poo, wellington boots, along with a good old-fashioned cup of tea and cake in a typical farmhouse kitchen like that of Ali’s where Jack and her terriers are often found.
Ali Stearn and Jack Brock have been voluntarily visiting care homes and children’s hospices for over 10 years, and since 2019 have fundraised to support Dementia UK. Ali has been recognised for this service to the community and been a guest at 10 Downing Street and the House of Commons for her charity work. Jack also won Animal Hero of the Year in 2022. Ali started painting in 2018 and developed her talents to create the Jack Brock series of picture books.
