Jack would like to explain to you how he enjoys supporting
Dementia and why it is a charity close to his heart.

Jack Brock

Dedicated to make everyone smile

I’ve always said if I had a £1 for every smile I put on someones face I could make a real difference. Here is my chance, if I can make you smile then please can you donate £1 to Dementia UK.

My visits are at different care homes so the residents can stroke my nose and feed me carrots. Just to give them some relief and a change of scene. My visits will be filmed by my handler Ali and we pledge that if the footage makes you smile you could donate just £1. (More if you like!) I have had videos of me viewed over 150,000 times and just wish if only I had a £1 for every smile I made to donate to Dementia UK to help families battling with Dementia.

A charity close to Jacks heart

Jack’s family have had several family members suffer from dementia, and sadly pass away from it too. It is an illness that now effects over 944,000 people within the UK which is set to raise over 1 million by 2025. Visits from animals can be an exciting part of a person’s day. Animals can be a wonderful source of love and laughter for people with dementia. Animal therapy is a way to help people cope with and recover from some physical and mental health conditions.

In 2013 Jack was approached by a lovely nurse who worked in a Royal British Legion Dementia care home.

The nurse had seen an advert of Jack in the EDP weddings feature and ask if he would visit the care home she worked at. Once the lady explained it was a care home for patients suffering with Dementia, Jack and his owner Ali thought it was sign and something they must try! Jack was so comfortable inside the home and even ventured into patient’s bedrooms, letting them stroke him whilst they sat up in bed. Perhaps all the sneaky visits into the farm house had filled him with the confidence of being inside.

A person with dementia can have trouble communicating with others or having conversations, stroking Jack helps them to stay engaged and involved.

More visits continued

From that first visit little acorns grew! With many more visits, which then followed to visiting Dementia cafes, and fund-raising events. The East of England Co-op soon heard of Jack! They made him their brand ambassador. Together Jack and The EOE Co-op helped to raise awareness of the illness.

Admiral Nurses

Jack and Ali went on to raise funds on their own for Dementia UK. Ali is currently being trained to be a Dementia UK ambassador. Admiral nurses are few and far between. They really are a life line to families suffering. Admiral Nurses help people living with dementia stay independent for longer – and support the people caring for them so that they will have the strength to cope with the bad days, and the energy to enjoy the good days.
